Chapter 19

Endra

“They have to stop sometime!” Endra howled, kicking a broken branch down the path as Tristan knelt by a small stream, filling their water skins. Images of her aunt and uncle kept popping up in her mind. Torture and death. Shamus sprawled out and being cut into.

Tristan looked up at her solemnly, his lips pursed. “We just have to pray they decide to rest at some point.”

She growled and took her water skin as he held it up to her, then settled down next to a wide pine stump. The humans would be in the Valen wildflower meadow by now, and that was easier ground to cover. It was becoming clear that Endra and Tristan were not going to catch them before they broke across the border. A day and a half into their journey, they needed to rest. Tristan was right; Endra wanted to be at full strength when she met these humans in battle. Though it went against her natural instincts, they entered Lok Turei for a couple of hours.

After meditating, Endra plucked a few dozen mulberries from nearby trees, then found a whole field of oversized dandelions for them to eat. Miri was no doubt off collecting a meal somewhere nearby as well. Endra knelt down to pick the dandelions, whose roots were especially nutritious and presented a pleasant, earthy flavor. Tristan was in the timber behind her, scrounging up some radiant blueberries, when Endra detected them: three Icclessian star wind horses, just breaking into the clearing.

Endra froze. These creatures scared more easily than the lavender buffalo. The star wind horses were stunning—a portrait of beauty and grace. The mare was deep brown with white patches and a golden mane and tail. White and brown feathered wings ran nearly the entire length of her magnificent body. Next to her grazed a youngling that was a quarter of her size but otherwise looked very similar. Those are the cutest little wings I’ve ever seen!

The stallion was massive. He was jet black, and one of the largest horses Endra had ever come across—maybe the largest, in fact. Even the mare looked like a pony next to him as they trotted majestically into the clearing to graze. Under different circumstances, Endra could have watched them for hours.

A sudden flash of light caught her eye. She turned and gasped to see a shower of golden-white fire shooting across the darkening sky. There were dozens of shimmering streaks cascading through the darkness, leaving burning trails in their wakes. Endra watched them for a moment, then realized that the stallion had moved closer. He stood barely thirty steps from her, unmoving and staring intently at her.

Like Miri, this stallion had fae-tipped ears resembling those of a lynx. His wings were massive; Endra judged the flight feathers to be roughly twice the size of Tristan’s.

“Endra,” Tristan whispered from right behind her.

Endra jumped, having been completely entranced by the magical horses. She peered over her shoulder—he was surrounding himself with currents of water.

“Combine your essence with mine.
